The universe of information has an important social function, because it builds and rebuilds history, using its own language. The locative scenes commonly found in texts in newspapers and magazines serve as a base for the theories of Fillmore (1979), Cook (1989), Nicolacopulos (1997), and Oliveira (1999). There is an expressive frequency of locative verbs, not only in their prototype sphere but also their metaphorical sphere. This productivity is confirmed by the subject matter “o apagão” (blackout). Details of the metaphorical process are included, i.e, the effects that a verb/predicator can cause, besides its basic meaning, in order to differentiate scenes which contain intrinsically locative verbs from those which contain metaphorical verbs/predicators.
Key words: scenes; verbs; locativity; prototype; metaphorical
