STUDENTS’ PREFERENCE FOR ENGLISH OR SPANISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE IN ENEM

Authors

Abstract

This scientific article examines the preferences of students at a school in the Alto Oeste Potiguar regarding the foreign language chosen for National High School Examination (ENEM). A questionnaire with ten questions was administered, asking about their favorite subjects, as well as their strategies for learning English and Spanish, among other topics. This is a mixed methods study with a bibliographical approach whose literature review is based on Mendes and Nunes (2019), Megale and Magalhães (2021), Alves (2021), and Base Nacional Comum Curricular (2018), among others. It was found that most students consider their English proficiency to be reasonable and Spanish proficiency to be good, and therefore chose Spanish for the exam. Results showed that students reached 60% on the Spanish test, while some students achieved 80% on the English test.
