Em 1998, Leyla Perrone-Moisés publica o livro Altas literaturas, o qual causa repercussão significativa na academia brasileira. Trata-se de um momento em que muito se discute não apenas o ocaso das vanguardas, mas também a ascensão dos estudos culturais em detrimento dos estudos literários. Neste ensaio, busca-se pontuar aspectos deste livro de Perrone-Moisés a partir de sua colocação em contraste com textos de Fredric Jameson, Terry Eagleton e Ítalo Moriconi, de modo que seja possível perceber o tom da discussão sobre estas questões no Brasil daquele período.

In 1998, Leyla Perrone-Moisés publishes Altas literaturas, a book that reverberates signifi -cantly on the Brazilian academy. This is a period in which there is a great debate on the randomness of the avant-garde and the ascension of cultural studies, while literary studies decline. This essay aims to question some concepts expressed in the book, contrasting them with the proposals of critics, such as Fredric Jameson, Terry Eagleton and Ítalo Moriconi.
