Atualmente os surdos são reconhecidos como minoria lingüística imersa a outras, partilhando o mesmo espaço físico. A comunidade surda possui uma forma peculiar de apreender o mundo, suas experiências são tidas através da visão. A língua de sinais, língua natural dos surdos, apresenta-se em uma modalidade diferenciada da língua portuguesa, pois é uma língua gestual-visual, apresentando uma estrutura gramatical diferenciada. Sendo assim, a língua portuguesa é tida como segunda língua e o aprendizado desta, pressupõe o aprendizado da língua de sinais. Assim, o contexto bilíngüe dos surdos é constituído de forma diferente do contexto bilíngüe dos ouvintes, sendo pertinente estudos acerca disso.
