Abstract
The work is developed from the study of Machado de Assis chronicles that were published in "Good Morning" series between 1888 and 1889. It starts from the reader's point of view and the country's perception that was constructed in the context urban, shaped by the events of the Abolition of Slavery and the Proclamation of the Republic. In the text published weekly in the newspaper, we try to see how the chronicler positioned, even subliminally; the perceived impacts on the immediate reality; future prospects; the dissatisfaction with the limitations of time, curtained by irony and the subtlety that touches the minimum everyday. The tracks left by the language question time and indicates possible paths in an ongoing dialogue with posterity. In implementing the research, chronic shall be subject to disciplinary and confluent analysis of various fields of knowledge, including, literary analysis, history, journalism and sociology.
