Em 1915, Eduardo Guimaraens (1892-1928) publicou três poemas no segundo volume da Revista Orpheu, principal meio propagador do Modernismo português. Reconhecidos pela forte presença do Simbolismo francês – seja pelo tom decadente de “Folhas Mortas”, seja pela imagem central de “Sobre o Cisne de Stéphane Mallarmé” –, seus poemas se inserem naquilo que, ultrapassando os limites dos movimentos literários, desde Charles Baudelaire convencionou-se a denominar Modernidade. Com isto em mente, o presente trabalho pretende analisar a relação entre Modernismo e Simbolismo, com o objetivo de mostrar quais são suas confluências e especificidades, a partir da poesia de Guimaraens.
