Abstract

Under Brazilian law, a social organization (SO) is a type of nonprofit, association that receives a state grant to provide services of relevant public interest. This article situates the Social Organizational (SO) model within the Brazilian legal framework and analyses the SO's management model evolution, past 21 years from its creation.

The model was structured aimed to support multiple areas of public interest, such as education, health and culture. However, the present article has its focus on the OS role as a facilitator for the  Academic Research and Industrial Innovation transformational process.

This work draws attention to various legal instruments and postulates that give legal support to the SO management model and historical issues regarding the Social Organization creation and its consolidation. The article also discusses the course that this model might take in the next years and analyses the specific EMBRAPII case.
