Abstract

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, global warming and climate change are pressing concerns in society. All economic sectors demand products and services and their activities are related to GHG emissions, especially carbon dioxide (CO2). In order to understand the behavior of these variables in Brazil, at a subnational level, this study aims to identify the relationship between economic sectors and CO2 emissions in Brazilian states. Methodologically, it is a quantitative study with correlation tests. The dependent variable is the CO2 emission measured from the number of tons of equivalent CO2 generated in each Federative Unit. The independent variables, in turn, correspond to the percentage share of the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors in the state's GDP. The results confirm the relationship between CO2 emission and the participation of the agricultural and industrial sector in the economy, that is, the greater the participation of the primary and secondary sector in the GDP, the greater the CO2 emission tends to be. On the other hand, a negative relationship was identified between CO2 emissions and the service sector, with the tertiary sector being a sector that contributes to the reduction of emissions.
