Abstract

This article presents a systematic literature review on information technology governance (ITG) to identify the critical characteristics of ITG. The analysis of the portfolio suggests five main thematic clusters: (1) Importance and benefits of ITG; (2) Alignment between IT and business; (3) Implementation and operationalization of ITG; (4) ITG processes and tools; and (5) Specific aspects of IT governance. The results highlight the strategic relevance of ITG, its ability to manage risks and protect against losses, the importance of aligning IT and business objectives, and the challenges related to effectively implementing its structures and processes, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises. The study also indicates opportunities for advancing ITG research, such as investigating emerging technologies and increasing integration between academia and management practice. The systematic review condenses the knowledge of the core characteristics of IT governance, revealing its importance, benefits, and forms of application.
