MATHEMATICS TEACHERS CONTINUING EDUCATION: AN EXPERIENCE WITH DISTANCE LEARNING

This article describes a qualitative research about an outreach course for in-service Mathematics teachers from Basic Education. The distance course included Mathematics modeling activities. The goal was to identify the contributions of this type course for the continuing education of Mathematics teachers, which in turn contribute to the teaching and learning of this knowledge area. The course lasted one hundred hours and was divided into three modules that covered: a) reading texts and activities; b) participation in chat rooms and discussion forums; c) preparation of research and teaching activities portfolios and journals; d) development and implementation of a Mathematics Modelling activity in Basic Education. Six teachers participated of the outreach course. The data analysis showed relevant aspects about the development of the course, such as teacher/student interaction, the theoretical and practical appropriation of Mathematical Modeling, reflections about teaching in Basic Education and learning Mathematical concepts.Downloads
