The goal of this study is to present an overview of fluoridation in public water supply in a Brazilian municipality. Longitudinal descriptive study, from 2011 to 2023, resulting from the extension project: Heterocontrol of Fluoridation of Public Water Supply in the Municipality of Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Water samples were collected in different locations in the municipality and were analyzed by fluoride concentration, through the electrometric method, using a digital potentiometer with a specific electrode for the fluoride ion. From the 3133 samples analyzed, the majority, 1926 (61.1%) presented low levels of fluoride and a considerable average variation in the concentration of fluorides was observed, over the years, from 0.02 to 1.61 ppm/F, in addition to their heterogeneous geographic distribution. There is still a constant variation in fluoride levels over the years, which leads to the need for greater rigor in monitoring this measure in the municipality.
Keywords: fluoridation; water supply; dental caries.
