Abstract

This study aims to explore issues related to the land rights and self-sustainability of indigenous Garani community of the west of Paraná. It results from studies conducted in the extension project Encounters of citizenship: indigenous people and their rights (Encontros de cidadania: os povos indigenas e seus direitos), sponsored by Program University Without Borders (Programa Universidade sem Fronteiras), in which it is discussed with the Guarani who live in this region aspects about indigenous constitutional rights, creating space in which the communities were able to interact and discuss problems that affect them. Nowadays, the main problem has been the land issue which is highly relevant for them in order to maintain their culture. The Brazilian constitution is one of the most advanced regarding the promotion of indigenous people rights. However, it is not assured to them yet. During the project, we held meetings in the Guarani villages, where leaders and prayers discussed common problems and presented their demands to the ones that represent the agencies responsible for the implementation of indigenous policy in Brazil.
