Abstract

In Brazil there are three ways to guarantee the quality of organic products: the social control, the participatory system of guarantee and certification by audit. However, these processes usually are complex, particularly for family based farming. A partnership between High Education Secretary (SETI) instituted in 2009 the Organic Products Certification Program of Paraná. The nucleous at Ponta Grossa State University (UEPG) has been providing assistance and rural extension services (ATER) to help farmers to obtain organic certification. The nucleous has made 145 case studies and 11 units were certified until now. ATER services can guarantee the quality of organic products, essential to access the consumer market and to guarantee the credibility of the products, and thus, consolidate organic farming as an instrument for development of family based farming system.
