Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) are defined by the presence of more pronounced abnormalities than those attributed to reactive changes. The aim of the study was to analyze the profile of women assisted by the Municipal Health Department (SESMA, in the Portuguese acronym) diagnosed with ASCUS from January 2013 to December 2015. The cross-sectional study included 250 cases with a rate of 2.31% from a sample of 10,808 exams. The analysis demonstrated that 27% of the women ranged from 51-60 years old, 48% did not complete high school and 43.7% reported being in menopause. The data contributed to profile the patients diagnosed with ASCUS. It was concluded that it is necessary to complement the diagnosis using cytopathology methods in liquid medium and colposcopy after topical hormonal treatment. This would provide the women assisted by the Brazilian National Health System (SUS in the Portuguese acronym) to better understand their cases and improve their quality of life.
