MITIGAÇÃO DA DESINFORMAÇÃO SOBRE DESCARGAS ATMOSFÉRICAS NA REGIÃO METROPOLITANA DE BELÉM: O PAPEL DO PROJETO INFORAIO

Abstract

The high incidence of atmospheric discharges in the Metropolitan Region of Belém (RMB) poses a significant risk, requiring the dissemination of information. This study analyzes the perception of the urban and rural population of the RMB regarding atmospheric discharges, using data collected by the INFORAIO outreach project, affiliated with the Federal University of Pará (UFPA). In-person and online questionnaires were administered, reaching 642 participants, aiming to assess public knowledge about lightning, flashes, and thunder, as well as the safety measures adopted during storms. The results highlight a weak understanding of the phenomenon, especially in rural communities, where socioeconomic vulnerability exacerbates its impacts. The INFORAIO project has proven to be an important tool in mitigating misinformation, promoting educational initiatives in schools, and using social media to expand the reach of information. It is concluded that scientific outreach initiatives, such as INFORAIO, are essential for raising public awareness regarding atmospheric discharges in the RMB.
