Abstract

Through an analysis qualitative proposal, an investigation of the following theme is proposed: The Shakespearean political practice in Hamlet. The text comments on the behaviour and political strategies of the character Claudius in the piece Hamlet, by William Shakespeare. An understanding of the Shakespearean character is articulated with a support of political criticism to the work The Prince, by Niccolò Machiavelli. It is understood that these dialogues point to the understanding of the character King Claudius within the Shakespearean theater from the perspective of building the character of the ruler and his tactics of conservation and survival of the power relations that allow him to be King. The evolution and representativeness of the role of King in the play Hamlet is discussed, understanding that Claudius’s effort to remain in power rests on remaining in power and in his attempts to build a character of leader for himself and his subjects.
