ART / RESISTANCE – THE AESTHETIC EDUCATION IN SARAMAGO’S WORK

Authors

Abstract

ABSTRACT: From Manual de Pintura e Caligrafia (1977) onwards Saramago proposes an aesthetic education towards resistance, similar to Peter Weiss in Ästhetik des Widerstands (1975–81). In dialogue with distinct works of Art, both authors redefine the aesthetic perception of the horrors of human civilization, as opposed to the horror’s sublimation in the Enlightenment. In the case of Saramago, the question of the pathetic appears in O ano da morte de Ricardo Reis (1984) and leads, a decade later, to the radical denial of the sublimation of horror in O Ensaio sobre a Cegueira (1995).
