Plagiarism and Academic Honesty in Higher Education Institutions in Portugal and Spain: a Critical Review of the Literature

The relationship between plagiarism and academic integrity has been a concern for universities. Through a systematic literature review, we aim to understand the perspectives of students and university faculty on plagiarism, which teaching practices have been developed and implemented, and the recommendations of higher education institutions to promote academic integrity. The review covers the period from 2010 to 2026. We searched the Web of Science using the following descriptors: plagiarism and higher education; academic integrity; academic ethics. We found that the approach to this topic already allows us to understand the phenomenon. The conclusions point to the need for both ethical-evaluative training and institutional policies.
