The pedagogist and the educator: ideological models proposed by the journal O Ensino (1922-1924)

Abstract

This article addresses the role of the press as a research source in Brazil, from the 1970s onwards, without losing sight of its contribution as a vehicle of information and communication. From this perspective, journals, especially educational ones, are present as important sources of investigation of theories and practices that permeated the history of Brazilian education. In this study, the journal O Ensino [The teaching] (1922-1924) is highlighted, aiming to analyze the proposed conception in regard to teaching work, based on the article “Pedagogista e Educador”, by Cesar Prieto Martinez. The journal compares and questions the gap between the two meanings, highlighting the appreciation of practice to the detriment of theory. The objective of this article is to show the play on words that characterize the concept of teacher, defended by the Teaching Inspectorate of Paraná and the persuasive strategy in the journal that circulated in schools and that teachers from Paraná had access to.
