The 17 SDGs proposed by the United Nations aim to promote economic, social and environmental development for a sustainable society. Thus, the establishment of sustainable food systems must be approached in an interdisciplinary way. The research, teaching and extension project developed by PGAD, in a municipality in the interior of the state of São Paulo, sought to promote agroecological agriculture and the conscious consumption of food in a poor community. The action-research method was adopted for the development of the project, and after its execution resulted in the development of organic agriculture in the municipality, access to healthy food for the population of the municipality and food and environmental education. Challenges persist, but they can be overcome from the involvement and articulation of the public sphere, rural extension agencies and society.
