Abstract

The aim of this study was to list the medicinal plants known by the residents of the Rural Settlements of Araras (SP), as the first step to implement the vegetable garden in their community area. Data were obtained through a semi-structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study had a main informant and a key informant, totaling 17 people interviewed, and obtaining a list of 77 species of plants. The settlers emphasize the importance of these plants for their families and the desire to grow them. They reported that they resort more often to medicinal plants to treat colds and digestive problems, as an alternative to allopathy. Their knowledge about these plants differed only in terms of the age of the informants. The importance and cultural value of medicinal plants for the informants and the need to deepen the theme for further cultivation became clear.
