Abstract

The Pequeños Pantaneiros is an outreach initiative of the Pantanal Campus (CPAN) of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), which offers circus activities for children aged between 5 and 10 years. The aim of this article is to assess the reasons for joining and remaining in this extension program from the point of view of the project monitors and the children´s guardians. This is a qualitative case study. It was found that for both the guardians and the monitors, the children's permanence is linked to the playful nature of the activities. There was no unanimity in the responses regarding adherence: according to the guardians, the reasons were: combining physical activity with circus activity; the child's interest in the circus; and the child's need for physical activity. For the monitors, adherence was related to the free nature of the project.
