Abstract

The present study aims to verify the knowledge, limits and potential of commercialization of UFP by family farmers, in open markets in Western Santa Catarina. The work used a case study in five open markets, distributed in the cities of Chapecó, Seara and Paial, in the West Region of Santa Catarina. Considering a sample made up of 20 family farmers who perform the role of market traders in these locations. The main results demonstrated that the knowledge expressed through the use and consumption of UFP is weakened by farmers, as they only consumed 34 varieties of UFP throughout their lives. Since only 38.2% of the species consumed were commercialized. The research concludes by the need to offer activities such as courses, lectures, workshops, in order to raise awareness among participants about the cultivation and commercialization of UFP, as well as an alternative source of job and food security.
