Brazilian university extension emerged in the mid-1900s, despite being widely institutionalized only in the 1930s. The different conceptions of the term advanced according to political periods, not always restricted to its welfare conception, and reaching an emancipatory level. Through the extension curricularization law in 2018, the extension hours were institutionalized at 10% for Higher Education curricula. Considering the potential of extension activities, this work aims to present its multiplicity of meanings, a brief historical introduction of educational legislation, and to explore the context of a Physics course at a federal university (UF). Data obtained from interviews with a group of professors coordinating extension activities are presented, in order to map the potential and challenges of university extension to meet legislative demands and to understand university extension concepts built over time.
