This is a literature review study cross referenced with the Cultural Care Theory’s Diversity and Universality. It has emerged from the extension difficulties of better understanding the social context of the family care to the umbilical stump in newborns. The objectives were to know the state of the art for the care action planning and sharing knowledge to a more attentive care to the newborn. From the study analysis three themes emerged: umbilical stump physiological aspects - the recommended care; the care to the newborn praxis context - a focus on the umbilical stump and the family cultural influences on the care practice of the umbilical stump. The insights gained from the themes pointed the need of an interdisciplinary approach that allows the cultural values apprehension of the family care for the practice of the professional care to the umbilical stump, based on the pillars of the human and social sciences in addition to biological as an extensionista work philosophy.
