Abstract

This article discusses the potential and use of biological evolutionary theory during activities aimed at sharing scientific information in Basic Education. In 2011, an outreach project was carried out based on the combining of teaching, research and outreach projects. The teaching component was implemented by means of discussions with students from the Biological Sciences undergraduate course and Basic Education students about the concepts that support biological evolutionary theory. The research component comprised of the study of pedagogical strategies and the difficulties presented by Basic Education teachers when they had to teach theory. The research component was also based on interests/motivations and the acceptance of the evolutionary theory by High School students. The outreach component was developed through scientific fairs in public schools. The results demonstrate that initiatives that promote the sharing of scientific information and a closer relationship between universities and schools had important implications for the advancement of scientific education, especially in aspects related to evolutionary thinking and to the understanding of the dynamics of the living world.
