LETRAMENTO EM SAÚDE: ATIVIDADES DE PESQUISA, ENSINO E EXTENSÃO DE MÃOS DADAS

Abstract

A curricularização da extensão universitária em cursos de Medicina apresenta avanços e desafios significativos, considerando a carga horária extensa desses cursos e busca de iniciativas que mantenham interlocução com a comunidade. Este relato de experiência apresenta como um tema de pesquisa de iniciação científica propiciou a elaboração de um projeto de extensão, implementado e curricularizado em uma instituição pública de ensino superior. O projeto busca promover o letramento em saúde como fator essencial para a promoção da saúde e a qualidade de vida. Por meio de atividades como ações educativas em salas de espera e interações com escolas públicas, foram desenvolvidas competências comunicacionais e reflexivas nos estudantes, além de ampliar o impacto social da universidade. Os resultados apontam para uma melhora no entendimento da população sobre o processo saúde/doença e na formação humanizada dos alunos, além de reforçar o potencial transformador da curricularização da extensão universitária na integração da extensão-ensino-pesquisa.

Author Biographies

DAISY MARIA MACHADO, Escola Paulista de Medicina - Universidade Federal de São Paulo - UNIFESP

She holds a degree in Medicine from the Paulista School of Medicine – Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP, 1985), a medical residency in Pediatrics from UNIFESP (1987), a Master's degree (1994), and a Ph.D. (1999) in Pediatrics and Applied Pediatric Sciences from UNIFESP. Conducted doctoral research at the Blood System Research Institute (formerly Irwin Memorial Blood Center) in San Francisco, California, affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Clinical-Qualitative Research Laboratory of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP).

She is an Associate Professor at the Federal University of São Paulo, working in Pediatric Infectious Diseases in clinical care, teaching, and research. She is a faculty advisor in the Graduate Program in Pediatrics and Applied Pediatric Sciences at UNIFESP and a full member of the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics.

She collaborates with the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and CCASAnet (The Caribbean, Central, and South America Network for HIV Epidemiology), participating in multicenter collaborative studies on HIV infection in children and adolescents. Additionally, she is a member of the Committee for Antiretroviral Therapy in Children and Adolescents of the National STD/AIDS Program.

She has extensive experience in Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases, with a focus on HIV infection and co-infections in children and adolescents. Completed a Specialization Course in Health Education (CEES) at the University of São Paulo (USP) (2020–2021), where she has served as a preceptor since 2022.

She currently serves on the Structured Teaching Faculty Committee (NDE) and the Faculty Development Committee at the Paulista School of Medicine—UNIFESP.

GRAZIELE LEITE DOS SANTOS, Escola Paulista de Medicina - Universidade Federal de São Paulo - UNIFESP

Physician graduated from the Paulista School of Medicine, Federal University of São Paulo. Served as Director of Internal Relations at the Brazilian Association of Academic Surgery Leagues – São Paulo Chapter (ABLAC-SP) from 2021 to 2022. Member of the Pharmacodependency League (LFD) at the Federal University of São Paulo from 2018 to 2020. Member of the Academic Trauma League (LAT) at the Federal University of São Paulo from 2019 to 2022. Member of the Vascular and Endovascular Surgery League (LACV) at the Federal University of São Paulo from 2020 to 2021. Member of the Plastic Surgery League (LCP) at the Federal University of São Paulo from 2021 to 2022.

CAROLINE RODRIGUES NOVAIS, Paulista School of Medicine - Federal University of Sao Paulo

Medical student at the Paulista School of Medicine – Federal University of São Paulo (EPM/UNIFESP) and a volunteer in the Voluntariado EPM extension project. Served as a member of the Organizing Committee of BRAINCOMS – Brazilian International Congress of Medical Students (2022) in the scientific department and worked as a scholarship holder in the Health Literacy Extension Project (2022). Currently, she is a board member of the Academic League of Plastic Surgery and the Academic League of Internal Medicine at EPM.

Gabriel Ronatty Tavares Santos, Paulista School of Medicine - Federal University of Sao Paulo

Gabriel Ronatty is a medical student at the Paulista School of Medicine (Unifesp). During high school, as part of his Junior Scientific Initiation at the Cell and Molecular Therapy Center (NUCEL - www.usp.br/nucel), Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo (FMUSP), he actively developed and participated in research in the fields of molecular biology, biotechnology, and medicine.

He has received awards for his contributions and presentations of the project "Pancreatic Decellularization for the Creation of a Bioartificial Pancreas for Type 1 Diabetes Treatment: Searching for the Best Detergent" at various scientific fairs and congresses, including the Brazilian Science and Engineering Fair (FEBRACE), the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF Intel 2017, Los Angeles), and the 2020 Unifesp Academic Congress, where he won second place in the health sciences category and received international recognition.

He was a member and coordinator of the Health Philosophy Study Group (GEFS - student division) and the founder and director of the Academic League of Health Philosophy (LAFIS), affiliated with the Health Philosophy Study Group – UNIFESP/CNPq. He also serves as a teaching assistant for the elective course "Is There Life Without Prognosis? When Philosophy, Bioethics, and Palliative Care Meet!"

FATIMA KAZUE OKADA, Paulista School of Medicine - Federal University of Sao Paulo

She holds a Biological Sciences (Teaching Mode) degree from São Paulo State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho – UNESP (2004). She completed a Master's (2008) and a Ph.D. (2013) in Sciences at the Federal University of São Paulo – UNIFESP, emphasizing Experimental Male Reproduction. She conducted postdoctoral research in the Human Reproduction Department at UNIFESP (2018).

She has experience in education, particularly in preparing, developing, and applying practical lessons in Science and Biology teaching. Additionally, she has expertise in male reproduction, both in toxicological studies on animals and in the analysis of human semen samples. Engaged in research since undergraduate studies, developing research and extension projects funded by FAPESP, CNPq, and FUNDUNESP.

Taught classes from undergraduate studies through to Master's enrollment, received a FAPESP scholarship during the Ph.D., obtained funding for research support from FAPESP, and a CAPES scholarship. Throughout the research period, the toxic effects of the chemotherapeutic drug etoposide on germ cells in experimental animals were studied, and a potential cytoprotective agent was assessed to mitigate its adverse impact on male fertility. Conducted all experimental procedures, acquiring expertise in drug administration to animals, germ cell isolation, and culture.

To complement her training, she completed postdoctoral research in the Human Reproduction Department at UNIFESP.

SAMARA , Escola Paulista de Medicina - Universidade Federal de São Paulo - UNIFESP

She holds a degree in Biological Sciences – Medical Modality from São Paulo State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP, 1999), a Master’s degree in Biological Sciences – Pharmacology from UNESP (2002), and a Ph.D. in Sciences – Morphology and Developmental Biology from the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP, 2007).

Currently, she is a professor at the Paulista School of Medicine – Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), where he teaches Developmental Biology and Embryology in the Medical School.

Her research focuses on Reproductive and Developmental Biology. It investigates the effects of various experimental conditions, such as chemical factors and chronic disease models, on male reproductive biology, sexual behavior, and reproductive capacity. Additionally, using Wistar rats as an experimental model, her studies explore paternal effects on embryofetal development, perinatal outcomes, and long-term effects on offspring.
