A BOA NOVA E O PELICANO: DEBATES SOBRE O INFERNO (1871), NO SÉCULO XIX

Abstract

In the midst of the clashes developed through religious-doctrinal periodicals, the novel was present as a target of combat or defense, between ideologies/positions contrary to their respective doctrines. Appraisals were diverse, while the Catholic Church rejected the reading of novels, Freemasonry defended it, emphasizing the encouragement of free thought. These discussions around titles and authors took place in the province of Grão-Pará, through two opposing newspapers: the catholic A Boa Nova (1872 - 1883), under the direction of Dom Macedo Costa, Bishop of Pará, and the masonic O Pelicano (1872 – 1874), under the management of Dr. José de Assis, politician and influential Freemason in the region. Among the works condemned in this period, the novel O Inferno (1871), by Auguste Callet (1813-1883), was debated by both newspapers, energizing the altercations between the two, which generated the clash over the reading of this novel in the doctrinal The Portuguese version of the work was translated and prefaced by Camilo Castelo Branco, and caused controversy regarding its circulation and propagation in the periodical press, regarding the condemnation of reading.
