Abstract

From the midst of 1868, the war between Paraguay and the Triple Alli-ance, among Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, begun in 1865, took a new course. Real and imaginary reasons forced Francisco Solano López, the Paraguayan Presidente and commander-in-chief of its army to fly off its capital, Asunción, to the North in order to get rid of the slow though steady occupation of the Pa-raguayan territory by the Allies. Meanwhile, began hunting his "betrayers", those who didn't want to support his crazy decision of going on with the war anymore. Due to that, Paraguayan women faced a terrible exodus: in one hand, there were the traidoras (betrayers), who were convicted for having any relative or friend considered as a political guilty. Those who weren't shot to death after having suffered all kinds of torture and shame became destinadas (destined) and were sent to the North, where a concentration camp was created for them. On the other hand, there were the residentas (residents), who had any relative in the troops or simply used to live by the villages at the countryside where the Paraguayan troops passed by. These ones were condemned by the circumstances to follow the army towards the North. This article is a study of that via crucis of destinadas and residentas, and its consequences.
