Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of domestic chinaware found in and taken from a residence of a mid-nineteenth century Porto Alegre: the Lopo Gonçalves mansion. Based on the study of this material besides the analyses of the structure of living quarters it was a discussion of behavioural topics with regard to consumer patterns of the inhabitants and changes due to that century. Therefore, the sample was divided in two periods concerning the two families wich lived in the mansion between 1850 and 1890. The differences between the samples indicated changes in the way of using the refereed items wich were explained based upon a more extensive context: that of the urban development of Porto Alegre in the XIX century.
