Abstract

This study investigates some aspects of the Guarani Wars, in which Guarani militiae and Portuguese-Spanish army took part. The confrontation comes about due to an agreement reached by these two Iberian nations, which estipulated that the Guarani indians abandon their own territory, the Seven Settlements of the Oriental Side of Rio Uruguai (Sete Povos da Banda Oriental do Uruguay), in favor of Portuguese. The origin of the disputes for the territories situated in the Rio da Prata region by Iberian nations, their interests and the ways tried by the local government to downgrade this conflict until an impasse is reached, demanded that a more precise division of such territories be made. The historical context of the Madrid Treaty and of its rules, as well as of its repercussion over the Missions and over Europe, where it had been conceived, are herein analysed. Correspondence of the time is analysed for the relationship between the Portuguese-Spanish, the Jesuits and Guaranis as regards the Madrid Treaty.
