Abstract

Brazilian universities consider extension to be a foundational pillar of their conceptual framework. However, it does not receive the same recognition or financial investment as teaching and research. Given the challenges in implementing extension projects and its curricularization, this report presents “Olha a Ilha”, an extension project developed by PELD/ELPA (PELD/CNPq) in collaboration with the Parceiros do Mar/FURG project. Activities were conducted in two schools located on Ilha dos Marinheiros (Rio Grande – RS), developed in partnership with the school community, to foster a sense of belonging among participants, introduce the ecological aspects studied by PELD-ELPA, and promote environmental conservation in their local environment. Based on the materials generated throughout the project, we demonstrate that it is possible to integrate research with extension, showing that beyond producing high-impact scientific publications, we can make a meaningful difference in the local community.
