This article presents the results of a study on the processes of subjectivation of people incarcerated at the Associação de Proteção e Assistência aos Condenados (Apac), an institution that is part of the alternative system for serving prison sentences. The analysis material used was letters and notes sent by inmates in one of the units of that institution to the psychology team of the extension program “(A)penas Humanos” at PUC Minas. The content analysis proposed by Laurence Bardin was applied to the material. It was found that three themes form discursive cores in the letters of the inmates: the losses experienced; helplessness/impotence; and uncertainty about the future. Psychoanalytic theory was also used to understand these themes. These results demonstrate that, despite the differences between Apac and the common penal system, there is still much to be done to enable incarcerated individuals to serve their sentences with dignity and the expectation of social reintegration.
