Abstract

In the first half of the of the 1960 ́s, tradition and modernity, engagement and fonographic industry, artistic quality and success, were not factors or conditions for the musicians of the nationalistic source of Bossa Nova. In this sketched context of artistic-cultural production, to find a form of critically acting within a market structure became one of the main objectives of the engaged intellectuality being also the nationalistic causes of the time. With these concerns, each specific individual or group , had tried to find a coherent solution for this problem: how to remain engaged and participant, in view of the cultural industry offering chances of professional recognition and financial return? In the area of music, the answers for this question depended on the trajectory and personality of each interpreter, composer or musical producer. Carlos Lyra, then, for his performance in some fronts (CPC da UNE, Teatro de Arena, Cinema Novo, among others) and for his artistic production, was one of the first musicians to demonstrate the concern with the engagement of the Bossa Nova.
