Abstract

Since the first mention of cryptocurrency until today, an increase in the number of investors in this type of financial transaction has been observed, as well as governmental efforts to regulate this type of transaction. Following these efforts, this research aims to analyze the perception of applied social sciences academics regarding the recognition of cryptocurrencies in the financial reports of companies. This research has a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive character and uses questionnaires for data collection. The research is carried out with 3rd and 4th grade students who study in courses in the area of applied social sciences, being limited to courses in administration, accounting and economic sciences at a state university in the state of Paraná. The answers were analyzed and tabulated via electronic spreadsheet. The survey results indicate that 95% of respondents have heard about cryptocurrencies, 91% recognize its classification as an organizational asset and 75% are aware of the obligation to declare such an investment in the IRPF. Regarding the classification of cryptocurrencies as intangible assets, financial instruments and cash and cash equivalents, it was observed that 48%, 24% and 39% of the respondents, respectively, adopt appropriate practices, in line with the theoretical recommendations for each of the classifications. Therefore, this research shows that less than 50% of the respondents are aware of specific practices on the recognition of cryptocurrencies in the financial reports of companies.
