Abstract

This article, part of my path toward a master's degree, aims to investigate whether a video game can be characterized as a work that challenges the conventional narratives of the cultural industry. To that end, it analyzes the use of cordel literature and sertanejo orality in two productions that engage with Northeastern Brazilian culture: the film Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol (1964), by Glauber Rocha, and the Brazilian video game Árida: Backland's Awakening (2019). The goal is to understand how the game constructs alternative discourses to the hegemonic narrative of the video game industry through elements rooted in the popular traditions of the sertão.
