Abstract
The methodological tool of the validity claims: a contribution to data analyzing in critical educational studies
This article discusses the contributions of the methodological tool of validity claims to critical educational research. This data analysis tool was formulated by Jürgen Habermas and rearticulated into the field of critical educational research by Phil Francis Carspecken. This text introduces the validity claims, discusses core concepts of this tool and explores a case in which the tool was used. In this case, the tool is presented as a key to reading data collected by questionnaires on how students from unequal schools in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, judge the quality of their education. It is argued that this perspective constitutes a possible theoretical-methodological framework for critical analysis and, furthermore, that the formal incorporation of analytical perspectives by itself contributes to the debate and research of the area in Brazil.
