Curiosity and curious people in Portuguese Enlightenment: words, their uses and meanings

Abstract

In this text, we aim to identify the meaning(s) of the words curiosity and curious for Portuguese society in the eighteenth century. Although the change in the meaning of a word should not seem surprising, since meanings are contingent and derived from social practices, we seek to determine the meanings attributed to the words mentioned in their contexts of enunciation, considering who used them and with what intention, based on the analysis of texts produced at that time.

Antonio Cesar de Almeida Santos (UFPR), Universidade Federal do Paraná

Bacharel e licenciado em Ciências Sociais pela Universidade Federal do Paraná (1992), Mestre em História (1995) e Doutor em História (1999) pela mesma Instituição. Professor do Departamento de História da Universidade Federal do Paraná, desde 1998. Professor do Mestrado Profissional em Ensino de História (PROFHistória/UFPR). Pesquisador do Centro de Documentação e Pesquisa em História (CEDOPE/UFPR) e do Grupo de Pesquisa Cultura e Educação nos Impérios Ibéricos (CEIbero).
